Mysore

Maharaja’s palace

The palace dominates the city’s skyline and is an edifice beautified by ornate domes, archways, turrets, colonnades and sculptures. The palace has a magnificent Durbar hall with a 200 kg gold throne inlaid with precious stones. There are wall paintings of the Dasara procession.

Chamundi Hill

Atop this hill on an altitude of 3,489 feet there is a temple dedicated to Chamundeswari, the consort of Lord Siva. Two-thirds of the way up the hill there stands a giant image of a Nandi (Siva’s bull) of 16 feet high and 25 feet long.

Brindavan Gardens

The gardens are situated at the base of the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam built across the river Cauvery. The terraced Brindavan Gardens with swirling fountains and illuminated by myriad colourful lights look like a fairy land. There are boating facilities.

Chamarajendra Art Gallery

The Se Cathedral is located in old Goa, Panjim. The Portuguese Viceroy Redondo commissioned the Se, or St. Catherine’s’ Cathedral, southwest of St. Cajetan’s, to be “a grandiose church worthy of the wealth, power and fame. It took 80 years to build and was not consecrated until 1640.

Zoological Gardens

This century-old zoo houses nearly 2,000 animals and has a distinction of breeding wild animals in captivity, such as the venemous King Cobra.

Places around Mysore

Srirangapatna

An island town of the river Cauvery. Here you can find the famous Ranganathaswamy temple and Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s amrit. There is a fortress of Tippu Sultan in the middle of the island. Inside the fortress there is Tippu’s mosque with its twin minarets.

Bandipur wildlife sanctuary

Bandipur is known for its herds of bison, spotted deer, elephants and sambhar. Tigers and leopards are seen occasionally.

Ranganathittu bird sanctuary

Bird sanctuary of 675 hectares with migrant birds like darters, egrets, spoonbills, white ibis, open bill storks, night herons, pond herons, etc

Somnathpur

Sri Somnath temple

This temple built in 1268 AD is known for its Hoysala architecture. The temple is seated on a star-shaped base, set on a chiselled plinth and guarded at intervals by miniature elephants. The temple walls depict scenes from Ramayana, Mahabharata and Bhagavata and life and times of Hoysala kings.

Belur

This Belur temple is dedicated to Lord Channakeshava. It is embellished with carvings, which in intricacy fineness of finish and sheer beauty have few equals in the world. The temple is one of the finest specimens of Hoysala architecture.

Halebidu

The Hoysaleshwara temple is also a specimen of Hoysala architecture. A stellar base with the emblem of a lion, and elephants seemingly supporting the temple, signify stability. Several mythological episodes and legends rendered imaginatively in relief can be traced. An open-air museum in the temple precincts displays treasured articles of sculpture.

Shravanabelagola

Tungabhadra Dam

162-foot-high dam with a reservoir covering an area of 378 square kilometre. The two kilometre long dam gives a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside.

This place is known for its breath-taking spectacle of sunset.

Kodagu

Coorg is the green magic of Karnataka full of wooded valleys, coffee plantations, orange groves and paddy fields. Places of interest are the Fort, Raja’s Seat and Sri Omkareshwara temple and the golf course near the town.
